Whether you’re an employee, manager or the CEO, working relationships can be sensitive areas to manage at times. Taking the power balance into account, it can be difficult to communicate effectively with managers, especially when they’re hovering over your shoulder all the time.

It can be hard to get things done with an overbearing manager checking up on you every five minutes. A manager that doesn’t know what you’re supposed to be doing isn’t much help either. What’s their background?

The first thing you want to do is to get to know your manager better. What’s their background? What kind of experience do they have? Get to know them

These days’ social networking profiles are a treasure trove of personal information. Or if you feel like a bit of a stalker, take them out for a social coffee and chat. The real purpose of getting to know your manager is to find out what makes them tick. Their values, passions and habits are all vital information to help understand your manager.

Figure out their thinking

The key to managing people is to figure out the way they operate. If they’re detail-oriented people it’s more likely they will want to hear detailed reports and specific numbers. If they’re result-oriented, they’re more likely to want to know what has been produced and what action is happening.

Communicate what you need

Managers aren’t mind readers so when you need something of them, make sure to let them know. It might just be letting them know how you like to work so they understand you have a particular way of doing things. Everybody has different ways of operating, whether you’re an intuitive or creative type, it will be easier for the manager if you let them know the best ways you work.

Bridge the gap

Once you have identified how your manager likes to approach things, you can begin to see how you can adapt to each other.  It’s all about expectations for behavior. Whether it’s to do with preferred methods of communication or your work process, once you know the differences between you, attempt to bridge the divide. Set some explicit expectations if you need to. If you don’t like being interrupted, tell them you’d prefer to work without distractions for a while.

Ideally, you want to build a strong relationship with your manager. Being overly sensitive or just avoiding situations is really not an efficient way to get the job done.
